AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Early in the Big 12 championship game, Texas defensive tackle T’Vonde Sweat was on offense, lined up in a goal line formation to deliver a what everyone expected to be a crushing block for someone else seeking a touchdown. At 6-foot-4, 362 pounds, Sweat is a masher. But he barely brushed against an Oklahoma State defender before tip-toeing toward the back of the end zone for a soft pass, a cradled catch and a TD. A big man TD, followed by a Heisman pose. Sweat’s touchdown launched the Longhorns to a 49-21 rout that secured the program’s first Big 12 title since 2009 and put them in the College Football Playoff for the first time. And it put the exclamation mark on a regular season in which Sweat could arguably be considered Texas’ most valuable player. All of it is why Sweat, a fifth-year senior and the Outland Trophy winner as the nation’s top interior lineman, chose to return to Texas this season. He is the fourth Longhorn to win the Out...In its 75th year, the AP Top 25 men’s basketball poll is still driving discussion across the sport

When the first AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll was published in January 1949, Saint Louis was installed at No. 1 ahead of mighty Kentucky, thanks to a head-to-head win a few weeks earlier in New Orleans. The poll did exactly what was intended, and what it has continued to do for 75 years: It sparked debate. Were the Billikens of coach Eddie Hickey — the defending NIT champions at a time when that tournament was more prestigious than the NCAA Tournament — really deserving of the top spot? Would the Wildcats of Adolph Rupp win a rematch? And what of Western Kentucky, Minnesota and Oklahoma A&M, some of the other powerhouse programs of the era?“It was a case of thinking up ideas to develop interest,” Alan J. Gould, then the sports editor for The Associated Press, explained years later. “Sports was then living off controversy, opinion, whatever. This was just another exercise in hoopla.”Gould had dreamed up the AP college football poll in 1936, when he asked newspaper ed...Michigan Supreme Court will not hear appeal in Trump case, allowing him to appear on primary ballot
