Families of hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza were on edge Wednesday as the planned release of dozens of hostages was delayed. Israel’s cabinet approved a deal on Tuesday to free at least 50 hostages during a four-day pause in the ongoing war with Hamas. Under the agreement, Israel must also release 150 Palestinian prisoners in a trade only for women and children on both sides of the conflict. The deal is structured such that, each day, a group of hostages will be released to be taken to a designated border point. As of Wednesday, though, at least one official said releases are not expected to begin until at least Friday. “I was hoping for a Thanksgiving Day miracle and my hopes were dashed,” said Boston-area resident Jason Greenberg. Greenberg said five of his family members were taken hostage when gunmen stormed into southern Israel back in early October. Greenberg said two family members are now dead.“I understand that this is the best deal that has be...

Bruins grind out 3-1 win over Florida

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:30:28 GMT

The Florida Panthers went for a quick knockout on the Bruins on Wednesday but the B’s took their best shot, steadied their legs and came away with a hard-earned 3-1 victory at Amerant Bank Arena.Linus Ullmark (27 saves) was excellent early on and the B’s made a pair of second period goals hold up for the victory. The Panthers were without their Selke Award candidate Sasha Barkov but, considering the intensity with which the Panthers started the game, it was a very good win for the B’s after blowing a late lead and losing in Tampa on Monday. With Charlie McAvoy’s high, late hit on Oliver Ekman-Larson from October 30 still on their minds, the Panthers came out flying and physical, landing a couple of early hits on the B’s defenseman.Florida dominated the early going and, if not for Ullmark (15 first period saves), the B’s could have been chasing the game from the get-go. But after the Panthers got the first two power plays, the B’s penalty kill ...

He then sat out the remainder of the drill and walked off under his own power before heading inside at the end of the 30-minute portion of practice that was open to the media. Bateman was flexing his foot before running the route on which he fell.Coach John Harbaugh said after practice that the injury doesn’t appear to be serious, “but we’ll see how he does tomorrow.” Bateman said his fall was “nothing,” that his foot is fine and that he’ll be out there Sunday night against the host Los Angeles Chargers.“It’s just something guys coming off injury deal with,” Bateman said. “I’ve been holding up strong all year. EVERETT — Too many weapons in too many places. That was the problem for St. Mary’s in trying to shut down Everett on Wednesday night at Everett Memorial Stadium. The Crimson Tide racked up over 500 yards of total offense en route to a 56-28 win over the Spartans to compete a 9-2 campaign in coach Justin Flores’ first season.“I was happy to give these guys a chance to play on Thanksgiving,” Flores said about a matchup that was only put together in August. The Crimson Tide’s explosiveness was clear early and often. Despite the Spartans ability to grind down the clock during its possessions, Everett seemingly always had a response and turned a close game into a runaway with three touchdowns in a 2:52 span late in the first half.“They just have so many weapons,” St. Mary’s coach Sean Driscoll said. The teams had traded touchdowns early before Damian Lackland scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns to give Everett a lead it never lost.A 34 yard Carlos Rodrigues to Christian Zamor co...

‘I’ve seen it all.’ Coby White focuses on consistency amid Zach LaVine trade rumors and Chicago Bulls roster turmoil.

Coby White has been here before. He’s no stranger to a roster rebuild. Or a coaching change. Or the overhaul of an entire front office. So when trade rumors began to swirl again this month, the Chicago Bulls starting point guard chose not to worry.“I’ve seen it all,” White told the Tribune. “A lot of people come and go. I’ve been through a whole change. It doesn’t really bother me. I really don’t even think about it. Live in the moment, stay in the present. At the end of the day, you gotta be prepared for anything.”Next to nothing remains of the Bulls team that drafted White with the No. 7 pick in 2019. Former general manager Gar Forman and former coach Jim Boylen were both fired 18 months into his arrival to Chicago. The ensuing years were defined by a full-scale rebuild as the Bulls brought in coach Billy Donovan and new players like DeMar DeRozan, Nikola Vučević and Lonzo Ball. But during all that change, one thing has...

SAN DIEGO -- Interfaith Community Services, located in Escondido, received a $5 million grant from Jeff Bezos’ foundation, Bezos Day 1 Families Fund. The foundation said the 38 groups were selected to use the donation to "continue their compassionate, needle-moving work to help families move from unsheltered homelessness and shelters to permanent housing with the services they require to achieve stability."“We just opened a new family shelter that has no government funding and it costs more than a million dollars a year to operate, we aren’t sure, haven’t been sure how to pay for it, we just knew it was needed, and so to have a gift like this come in, at a time when we are bringing families with children off the streets, into our shelter, helping them overcome homelessness, it's truly transformational," Greg Anglea, chief executive officer of Interfaith Community Services said in an interview with FOX 5 Wednesday.Anglea said this funding will help at least 2,500 families have a place...

Rescue of 41 workers trapped in collapsed tunnel in India reaches final stretch of digging

NEW DELHI (AP) — The rescue of 41 construction workers trapped nearly two weeks in a collapsed tunnel in northern India has reached the final stretch of digging. The drill that’s digging into the dirt and debris had made it through 44 meters (144 feet) out of approximately the 57 needed, Harpal Singh, a manager of another tunnel project who is helping with the rescue, told the Press Trust of India news agency late on Wednesday night. Once they finish excavating the additional 13 meters (43 feet), the rescuers can insert and weld together pipes through which the workers can crawl to their freedom. Singh said he hoped that the trapped workers would be rescued Thursday morning.Rescuers resumed drilling horizontally through the entrance of the tunnel Wednesday after problems with the machine forced them to stop digging last week and consider alternate rescue plans. The mountainous terrain in Uttarakhand state has proved a challenge to the drilling machine, which broke down as rescuers a...

MOUNT VERNON, Ky. (AP) — A train derailed and spilled chemicals in a remote part of eastern Kentucky on Wednesday, prompting officials to encourage residents of a small town to evacuate. Gov. Andy Beshear said in a statement that local officials in Rockcastle County were encouraging residents of Livingston, with a population of about 200, to evacuate. News outlets reported that a shelter was opened at a local middle school. At least 15 cars derailed in Rockcastle County, including two that spilled sulfur, railroad operator CSX told WKYT-TV. One crew member was treated at the scene for minor injuries.Beshear also declared a state of emergency in the county so more resources could be applied to the response. “By issuing a state of emergency, we are ensuring that every state resource is available to help keep our families safe,” Beshear said. WHITEHORSE — The Yukon government says it posted a $105-million surplus in the 2022-23 fiscal year, $65 million more than it predicted.Yukon Finance Minister Sandy Silver tabled the territory’s public accounts in the legislative assembly Wednesday, reporting a multimillion-dollar surplus far above budget forecasts for the time period. The government says it had $1.86 billion in revenues and $1.76 billion in expenses, recovering nearly $4 million in expenses from prior years. The territory holds $259 million in debt as of March 31 this year, $51 million less than forecast in its past estimate. The Yukon government says it was late tabling the public accounts due to new procedures that increased the workload to prepare, and the last time it missed a legislated deadline was the 2008-09 fiscal year. The territory says revenues were higher than expected due to more than $50 million in grants from the federal government, and it also collected over $25 million more in taxes than expe...
