Editor’s Note: The video above shows KXAN News Today’s top headlines for July 5, 2023.AUSTIN (KXAN) -- CapMetro's MetroRail service will be suspended Wednesday through July 14 as part of planned maintenance along the rail line.Special event MetroRail service will resume on July 15 for the Austin FC game at Q2 Stadium.A portion of Braker Lane will also be closed at the railroad crossing from July 7-12 as CapMetro crews continue work at McKalla Station. LIVINGSTON, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- According to the New York State Police, two people died after a Tesla driving at a high rate of speed crashed into a house in Livingston on Thursday. Peter Lasher, 81, was found deceased inside the home, and police currently cannot positively identify the driver, who also perished. Around 1:00 a.m., troopers responded to a home in Livingston for a structure fire with two reported occupants. Police say one was able to escape the flames before first responders arrived and was later taken to Albany Medical Center. The second, Peter Lasher, was found dead inside the residence.As firefighters extinguished the flames, a car which struck the house was found with a single occupant. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Albany Police Department is investigating a homicide that happened in a Second Street apartment on Tuesday around 11:45 p.m. Police say upon arrival, they found 26-year-old Eduardo Montes of Albany inside the basement apartment with a gunshot wound to his torso. CLAVERACK, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- According to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, two people died around 7:05 Tuesday night in a motor vehicle crash. Deputies say the crash happened on State Route 66 just north of County Route 18 (Fish and Game Club Road) in Claverack. ST. LOUIS - The 4th of July was not a blast for three people who were arrested for illegal firework sales.St. Louis Police shared photos of the fireworks on social media, showing hundreds of fireworks that were confiscated from illegal sellers. Officers said the bomb and arson team will properly dispose of the fireworks. Firefighters on Wednesday were preparing to suppress a fire burning on about 50 acres northeast of Fraser in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, according to authorities in Grand County.Lightning likely ignited this Devil’s Thumb fire but the cause remains under investigation, authorities said. While the fire wasn’t contained late Tuesday, rain overnight may have helped to squelch hotspots, Grand County Sheriff officials said in a posting on Twitter. On Wednesday, a U.S. Forest Service firefighting team was expected to coordinate the suppression.No evacuations were ordered. The fire apparently broke out Tuesday in the wilderness near the Devil’s Thumb Trailhead, about 7 miles northeast of Fraser. The weather in metro Denver will be cloudy, cool, and wet on Wednesday with gray skies and afternoon thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.Scattered rain showers were expected Wednesday morning, and some of the storms forming in the mountains and rolling eastward along the Palmer Divide between Denver and Colorado Springs Wednesday afternoon may be severe, weather service forecasters said.The high temperature in Denver Wednesday will be 67 degrees, decreasing to 56 degrees at night, forecasters said. On Thursday and Friday, the high temperatures are expected to increase, exceeding 80 degrees. A man lost part of his hand and a house caught fire Tuesday night as illegal fireworks were set off across Los Angeles.Emergency crews were called to Catalina Street in the Adams-Normandy neighborhood of South Los Angeles around 11:30 p.m.Witnesses reported a possible amputation as a man was lighting fireworks in the intersection. Crews arrived to find one person injured who apparently lost parts of his right hand. Video showed the victim covering the remains of his hand with a towel as emergency crews worked on him. A former Malibu resident was found guilty of defrauding investors out of $3 million through false promises of pre-IPO stock shares of Alibaba.Frank Harold Rosenthal, 48, who currently lives in New York City, pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud, the U.S., Attorney’s Office announced Monday.Rosenthal is accused of scamming victims out of more than $3 million with “bogus claims he had access to stock shares of Alibaba prior to its initial public offering,” officials said.Rosenthal falsely told victims he had inside connections at Goldman Sachs that would give him special access to purchase discounted shares of Alibaba, a popular Chinese e-commerce company.With the help of a middleman, David Kunkle, Rosenthal made false claims and representations while also pressuring Kunkle to solicit funds from his relatives and acquaintances for the bogus investment opportunity, authorities said.“To lend legitimacy to his fraudulent scheme, Rosenthal negotiated and drafted loan agreements and ...Latest news
